Jesse Eisenberg and Jeremy Irons Cast in Batman vs. Superman

Wow! We think it is safe to say no one expected these two simultaneous casting announcements for Zack Snyder's Man of Steel sequel! Read on for further details...

Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Jesse Eisenberg has been set to star as Lex Luthor and Jeremy Irons will play Alfred in the upcoming Zack Snyder untitled Superman/Batman film. The dual announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Snyder stated, “Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940. What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”

The director added, “As everyone knows, Alfred is Bruce Wayne’s most trusted friend, ally and mentor, a noble guardian and father figure. He is an absolutely critical element in the intricate infrastructure that allows Bruce Wayne to transform himself into Batman. It is an honor to have such an amazingly seasoned and gifted actor as Jeremy taking on the important role of the man who mentors and guides the guarded and nearly impervious façade that encapsulates Bruce Wayne.”

Eisenberg received Academy Award®, Golden Globe Award, Screen Actors Guild Award® and BAFTA Award nominations for his starring role as Mark Zuckerberg in David Fincher’s “The Social Network.” He also starred in Woody Allen’s “To Rome with Love” and Louis Letterier’s “Now You See Me.” He next appears in “The Double” and “Night Moves.”

Irons won the Academy Award® for his portrayal of Claus von Bülow in “Reversal of Fortune.” His work in the film also garnered him a Golden Globe Award. He won an Emmy Award and a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award® for his performance in the TV miniseries “Elizabeth I,” opposite Helen Mirren, and recently starred on the small screen as Rodrigo Borgia in Neil Jordan’s highly acclaimed Showtime series “The Borgias,” for which Irons earned a Golden Globe nomination. He was recently nominated for a SAG Award® for the PBS Great Performances television miniseries “The Hollow Crown,” for his performance as Henry IV.

Snyder’s film stars Henry Cavill, reprising his role as Superman/Clark Kent, Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne, and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince. The film also reunites “Man of Steel” stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.

The new film is currently being written by Chris Terrio, from a screenplay by David S. Goyer. Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder are producing, with Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Wesley Coller, David S. Goyer and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers.

The film is set to open worldwide on May 6, 2016, and is based on Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster, Batman characters created by Bob Kane, and Wonder Woman created by William Moulton Marston, appearing in comic books published by DC Entertainment.

Surprised, yes. Intrigued, definitely! It's just such a shame we have to wait another full year to see Snyder's vision of the World's Finest finally hit the big screen. Yet, as they say: Good Things Come to Those who Wait...

Weekend Review - Justice League: War

Like it or not, DC Comics' New 52 is here to stay. Personally, while we don't necessarily like everything about it, for the most part, we try to embrace the recent reboot in all its forms. Including the newest DC Animated film Justice League: War.

Based off the first six issues of Geoff Johns' and Jim Lee's Justice League run, War is a fitting way to jump into the New 52 Universe, considering the book it was based upon was one of the original New 52 launch titles.

The film, for those who've yet to read the story it's based upon, takes place in a very similar climate to that seen in Darwyn Cooke's New Frontier. It is a world where the general public is frightened of the superheroes and wants them to disappear. It is a world where Green Lantern is pursued by the Air Force, Batman is a fugitive, Superman is destructive and Wonder Woman is seen as a whore. Amidst this backdrop, we also have the introduction of heroes Cyborg, the Flash and Shazam. All in all, this is a very different world then the one we're used to. Until the army of Darkseid comes calling!

Believing these heroes pose a threat to their invasion plans, Desaad convinces his master, Darkseid, to move up plans to invade the planet. Hordes of Parademons are then sent through Boom Tubes to begin gathering and re-processing organic lifeforms into servants for their masters bidding. Realizing this new threat is bigger then all of them combined, our seven heroes agree to work together in an effort to purge their world of this deadly new adversary.

All in all, this is the gist of the film. Certain things have been changed over from the story it was based upon, most notably is the inclusion of Shazam and the absence of Aquaman. In all honesty, when we first learned of this change, we were somewhat skeptical. After all, DC and Warner Bros. were swapping out the King of Atlantis, who actually appeared in the original comics this film is based upon, for Shazam, who wasn't even mentioned. Plus, Aquaman underwent a huge transformation in the New 52, thanks to Geoff Johns, and actually became a credible threat to villains everywhere. After all the years of Arthur Curry being the butt of so many jokes, the King of Atlantis finally got his due, and the thought of not being able to see him wield his trident into battle against countless scores of Parademons was somewhat upsetting.

However, the inclusion of Shazam actually worked in the films favor! His character actually fit well within the confines of the story, acting as a source of encouragement for Victor Stone following his transformation into Cyborg, and adding some pretty funny one-liners over the process of the film. While we still would have preferred to see Aquaman amongst the ranks of the newly formed Justice League, we'll let it go, if only for the fact that DC and Warner Bros. are hinting that we may very well see an Aquaman solo animated film sooner rather then later, especially if you consider the post credit scene included in this title.

The voice cast is, to put it bluntly, stellar. Listening to a cast that includes Terra Nova star Jason O'Mara (Batman), Firefly alum Alan Tudyk (Superman), long-time Criminal Minds cast member Shemar Moore (Cyborg) and veteran voice actors Steve Blum (Darkseid), Dee Bradley Baker (Parademons), George Newbern (Steve Trevor) and Ioan Gruffudd (T.O. Morrow), you could very well see these ones lending their voices to a next generation Justice League animated series. Each character in the film was cast exceptionally well. So much so, in fact, that Jason O'Mara will soon be reprising the Batman role this Spring in the next DC Animated Original Movie - Son of the Batman.

The script is solid, following the course of the original source material pretty well. It features a nice amount of banter between Batman and Green Lantern, adding some additional humor in some of the films darker moments, and trust us when we say there are a few. From Superman breaking Desaad's neck, to Wonder Woman and Flash gouging out Darkseid's eyes, this entry into the DC Animated Universe, like most of the other films in the series, is somewhat mature in nature and is a title we wouldn't recommend for younger, or, more sensitive children. Still, for older readers and fans of DC Comics, Justice League: War is a win! Solid animation, a concrete script, well cast characters and plenty of action make this one a win in our books!

Now, in all fairness, when we usually review these things, we like to look at the bad as well as the good, but there really is nothing worth complaining about with Justice League: War. As mentioned above, while we weren't crazy about the omission of Aquaman initially, Shazam filled the space on the team roster well enough that it is something we could overlook. I suppose that, if we were to mention anything even remotely negative about the film, and we do mean remotely, we suppose some of the dialogue during Wonder Woman's ice cream scene was somewhat...over the top? Still, being that she was raised on Paradise Island her entire life, and is now acting as a political envoy to the outside world for her people, her reaction to the frozen desert isn't all that surprising. Again, and we can't stress this enough, this is a good flick!

DC Comics and Warner Bros. kicked off 2014 in a pretty big way with this new animated title, that hits retail this coming Tuesday. While there are plenty of people out there willing to boycott the New 52 reboot, we highly doubt there is any true DC Comics fan out there who won't enjoy this film fully!

If this is what the future of DC Animated Films holds for fans, it looks to be a bright time for the series! Now that Warner Bros. has gotten their feet wet, so to speak, and given us a look at the world created following the New 52 reboot, we can think of a slew of other titles we'd love to see adapted into animated films! The Court of the Owls, Green Arrow: Midas Touch, Swamp Thing: Raise Them Bones, there's plenty to pick from, each of which, we feel, would be solid additions to the DC Animated Universe cannon.

Again, like it or not, the DC Comics New 52 reboot is here to stay, but when you sit down, after popping this film into your DVD or Blu-Ray player, and give Justice League: War a watch, you'll soon realize that it's really not all that bad. In fact, it's really rather awesome!

Look for Justice League: War to land on Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital Download this coming Tuesday, February 4th.
