Original Godzilla to Get US Theatrical Release

The original Godzilla is, without a doubt, one of the greatest science fiction films ever made. No movie monster has spawned six decades of sequels, imitations and remakes like Godzilla. Even after all these years, it is still considered amongst the very top Japanese films ever made.

Despite its popularity, the truth is that the original Japanese version of Godzilla has very rarely even been seen outside of Asia. That is until New York-based Rialto Pictures got the theatrical rights from Toho and gave the film its first ever nation wide release. Following Godzilla's 50th anniversary, Rialto Pictures made their 35mm prints available for screenings and it has played at select theaters and events for the past couple of years.

With this year marking the 60th anniversary of Godzilla, and the release of Warner Bros. new Godzilla film, Rialto boss Bruce Goldstein felt it was time to revisit The King of the Monsters in a very big way.

This year, with help from The Criterion Collection, Rialto Pictures is bringing a newly restored version of the original Godzilla to theaters across the United States for the very first time. In order to avoid confusion with the upcoming remake, the classic will be marketed as Godzilla: The Japanese Original. It will be screened digitally through theater quality DCP and feature revised, and improved, English subtitles.

Godzilla: The Japanese Original will debut April 12th at the TMC Classic Film Festival in Hollywood, California. It will be introduced by Gareth Edwards, director of the upcoming Warner Bros. Godzilla film, and be followed by a presentation by Bruce Goldstein. This presentation will compare the original Japanese version of Godzilla to the Americanized King of the Monsters.

The nation wide release will follow in April 18th at the New York Film Forum and run until the 24th. The following theaters have also been confirmed, via Rialto's Godzilla screening page...

::    April 12    HOLLYWOOD,  CA    TCM Classic Film Festival
::    April 18 – 24    NEW YORK,  NY    Film Forum
::    April 25 – May 1    SANTA FE,  NM    Jean Cocteau Cinema
::    May 2 – 5    PORTLAND,  OR    Hollywood Theatre
::    May 2 – 8    SEATTLE,  WA    SIFF Cinema Uptown
::    May 8    AMBLER,  PA    The Ambler Theater
::    May 9 – 15    DENVER,  CO    Denver Film Society
::    May 9 – 15    FORT COLLINS,  CO    Lyric Cinema Cafe
::    May 14    DOYLESTOWN,  PA    The County Theater
::    May 15    JENKINTOWN,  PA    The Hiway Theater
::    May 23 – 26    HOUSTON,  TX    The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
::    May 28    LEXINGTON,  KY    Kentucky Theatre
::    July 17    COLUMBUS,  OH    Wexner Center for the Arts

More theaters and city listings are said to be added soon!
So, for our US based fans, will you be hitting up one of these fine establishments to check out the original, restored, version of Godzilla?

Leaked Jurassic World Script Slides Surface

Well, we knew it was only a matter of time before something like this happened. It appears as though some script slides from Colin Trevorrow's Jurassic World have ended up online.

Apparently, these were discovered by JPLegacy forum member Robotpo came across some casting slides, which are what actors are given to read during an audition. As such, it is possible that the information contained here may not even appear on screen, but it doesn't mean they won't either.

The script for Jurassic World is written by Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly and stars Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) as 'Owen', Bryce Dallas Howard (Spider-Man 3) as a smart, corporate scientist, Ty Simpkins (Iron Man 3) and Nick Robinson (Kings of Summer).

Again, please remember these are casting slides and it is possible none of the information within will even end up on screen.

Review: Star Wars: Scoundrels

Being an avid Star Wars fan from an early age, I am pretty well versed in the majority of Expanded Universe novels that have been published since the early 1990's. As such, having had almost twenty years to delve into that rich, fertile world, I have come to accumulate a small list of authors I consider to be the very best at penning expansions of George Lucas' sprawling galaxy so far, far, away.

Within the ranks of that aforementioned list are names like James Luceno, Karen Traviss and, of course, Timothy Zahn. Being the author of the first official Star Wars sequel story, Heir to the Empire, Zahn has had the longest run within the Expanded Universe. He is also one of the few authors of Star Wars books that has yet to disappoint. From The Last Command to Choices of One, Zahn always seems to bring his best in every story, be it Star Wars or otherwise. Thus, when it was announced he would be writing a heist-style story focusing on Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Lando Calrissian, I knew I had to check this one out!

And, once again, Timothy Zahn did not disappoint!

Without giving too much of the story away, the events of Scoundrels takes place between those seen in A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back and see's Han and his associates pooling their skills together to break into a Black Sun crime chief's estate.

Again, I don't want to give too much away, but throughout the course of the story are all those great things, double-crosses, botched plans, close calls, that make all heist books - and movies, for that matter, lots of fun. Of course, aliens, blasters and Imperial personnel are thrown in so as to not allow the reader to forget that this is a Star Wars story.

Scoundrels also boasts a rather impressive cast of characters. Not only do we follow Han, Chewie and Lando, characters made famous thanks to George Lucas' Original Trilogy, but characters from Zahn's other Star Wars books pop up in spots. Also, fans of the Shadows of the Empire mass media project from back in 1996 will be happy to see the return of Black Sun and its Falleen based roster of criminal scum that love to make life oh so very difficult from right under the Empire's nose.

Timothy Zahn, once again, tells a very fast-paced, action-packed story that is sure to keep Star Wars fans on the edge of their seats. It is fun and engaging, but not so overly complicated that you'll find yourself flipping back and re-reading sections of the story. Also, fans of other Han Solo stories such as Brian Daley's The Han Solo Adventures and A.C. Crispin's The Han Solo Trilogy will find Zahn's newest story akin to these in both tone and feel.

Star Wars: Scoundrels is a straight forward adventure piece that is simplistic in scope and easy to enjoy. Considering some of the tales that have been told in the Expanded Universe, and the thousands of years and countless generations dealt with, it is nice to sit back and read a beautifully written, classic style heist story set within the era of the Original Trilogy we all know and love!

This one is fun, plain and simple. And that is something that is so very crucial to the Star Wars Universe, not politics or explanations of where the Force comes from, but good, old-fashioned fun!

Fans of the Expanded Universe owe it to themselves to pick this one up! Author Timothy Zahn knocks another tale into orbit and proves, once again, why he truly is the cornerstone of the Star Wars Expanded Universe.

Special thanks to Random House publicist Greg Kubie for sending us a copy  for this review!
